With a break in the league fixtures it we played another friendly with Our Lady's Youth Eagles with the side who narrowly beat us before in a pre-season friendly. Willett started the much brighter of the two sides with the difference in divisions not really that apparent. A few half chances were created but we were unable to really test the goalkeeper. I personally was more impressed with some of the passing moves that we were stringing together which were of a real quality and involved most the players on the Willett side. With this in mind the Eagles didn't really manage to venture forward until 15 minutes in to the game when there forward tried a shot at George on the edge of the box but it was easily dealt with.
Another couple of build ups gave an opportunity for both Willett strikers to open the scoring but a good save and scuffed shot still meant we were unable to take an deserved lead into the break. We almost got caught from a corner when we failed to clear the ball and it bounced to an unmarked player. His tame shot looked nothing serious but George somehow got nutmegged but did manage to divert the ball across the face of goal where Adam was the quickest to react and clear the danger.
0-0 at half time and we were quite confident the game was there to be won if we kept up the level of performance however, although we started the second half with the same intent as the first and were in control of the game. A spell of panic hoof ball replaced the nice interchange passing we had been using to good effect in the last 10 minutes. And it was from here where we ended up losing the game, as a defensive mistake lead to an Eagles attack it looked as though we were able to deal with it after George blocked the initial shot but rebounded to their player his shot had goal written all over it but a great block by Rory, unluckily put the ball to the feet of their striker and he took a touch a rolled it into an unguarded net.
We pushed for an equaliser and again had few half chances but with our attacking intent we got caught defensively by giving the ball away in a dangerous position. Again a lot of work to do as the Eagles forward evaded a tackle on the byline and knocked a harmless looking cross that George could only parry onto Jack with the ball heading towards the net Rory tried his best to clear the ball but couldn't quite get a proper connection and could only help it on its way into the net.
Cruel on what was a good overall performance from Willett but a lesson in that if we can't kill a game off we leave ourselves open to get punished.
Man Of The Match Rory Bennett for his all round game was involved in a lot of our attacking moves particularly in the first half but also his defensive performance was great with some solid tackling and good blocks meant the oppositions' attacks were dealt with before the advanced up the pitch.
